Three approaches to inguinal hernia repair – the open Lichtenstein mesh technique, the open pre-peritoneal mesh technique and the laparoscopic mesh technique – using various configurations of SURGIMESH® WN hernia repair material were recently highlighted in clinical presentations by critical access and community hospital general surgeons at the Missouri Valley Hernia Symposium held in Kansas City, Missouri. This event, the first of its kind to focus solely on inguinal hernia repair outcomes in the rural patient population, demonstrated the ease of use, quick incorporation, high patient comfort and significant reductions in chronic pain when surgeons switched from using heavy weight knitted and woven polypropylene mesh to the next generation non-woven, microfiber technology of SURGIMESH® hernia mesh.
The presentations were given by three rural and community hospital general surgeons on the use of SURGIMESH® WN in 325 patients over a 29 to 33 month period. The surgeons found the SURGIMESH® WN material to be easy to work with. The mesh demonstrated a unique combination of flexible stiffness and shape memory that made working with the material more forgiving and helped produce patient comfortable hernia repairs. Complications were minimal with no post operative infections or mesh-related complications. In the total series there were no mesh related recurrences. Three recurrences (0.9%) for other reasons were reported as due to initial technical failures (unidentified defects and post operative mesh slippage).
SURGIMESH® is an advanced technology surgical mesh indicated for use in hernia repair - a common procedure performed in over 1 million patients in the US every year. Its novel platform technology is based upon random, non-woven polypropylene micro-fibers. This unique platform technology is the first non-woven, microfiber polypropylene mesh available for clinical hernia repair in the US. Pre-clinical studies have demonstrated that SURGIMESH® significantly improves upon current hernia mesh offerings by reducing aggressive foreign body and dense scarring reactions to produce well integrated and strong repairs without the previously reported issues of excessive repair stiffness, wrinkling or shrinkage with woven and knitted mesh materials.
